Do you speak Denglish?

The German language, that strange Teutonic beast, has changed greatly since I passed O-level German in the mid 1980’s.  Now it’s packed full of English loan words.

Federball Badminton

Fahrkarte Ticket

Fähigkeit Skill

Schwimmbad Swimming-Pool

Anforderung Requirement

etc

Denglish is particularly prevalent in business.  Imagine my surprise (to paraphrase Viz comic) when I needed to find a translation of the term “gap analysis.”  The German word is: Lückenanalyse, a proper German compound word.  Erstaunlich!

Have a linguistic day, won’t you!
