If God is good, then why do bad things happen?

The classic question.  Standard answers often revolve around being given free will, etc.  My answer is, I don’t know why.  Perhaps the issue is that people see God as a kind of magician, with a heavenly “customer service department,” who waves a magic wand as soon as he receives a prayer.

  • “Get me a job.”
  • “Find a cure for ebola.”
  • “Stop Sunray drinking himself to death.”

etc…

Maybe this view is simplistic.

Maybe God is more there as a listener, as a friend, than as wand-waver?  Ultimately we a probably faced with a choice: to have earthly wishes fulfilled, or to have God’s grace, which is far deeper and more enduring and endearing.

  1. Gott ist schön und gut, aber du musst es selber tun.
